A resume is a marketing tool that is used to sell your qualifications to prospective employers.

The following resume outline can be used as a guide. Fill in the blanks and you will have your history recorded in a resume.

OBJECTIVE

List the position or the type of employment you are applying for. The objective of your resume is. Ensure that your objective is appropriate to the company you are applying to!

QUALIFICATIONS

List your strengths. For example: ability to work as a member of a team, strong leadership capabilities, excellent organizational abilities, effective communication skills, excellent interpersonal skills, bilingual, experience with equipment and machinery, and 

any other strengths that pertain to the specific position you are applying for. Four to six points are recommended in this category.

EDUCATION

List your most recent education first. Include the name of the school, location, courses taken or major subjects studied, and

the year of study or the year of expected completion and level obtained (ie. certificate, diploma).

WORK EXPERIENCE

List your present job or most recent job and work back. Include the position you held, the name of the organization, and the dates 

of employment. Briefly list your major responsibilities while in that position. Remember to include any part-time or summer experience you may have.

VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE

Include any volunteer work you have done. Include the name of the organization, location, and the dates which you volunteered.

INTERESTS AND ACHIEVEMENT

Carefully select the interests and achievements you want to highlight. Include those which are relevant to the position you are 

applying  for. Here is a good place to include awards you have received.

REFERENCES

List at least three references on a separate page. Supervisors, managers, and teachers all make great references but avoid using          family or relatives. List the name of your references, their job title, name of the organization they work for, location, phone number 

and an email address if one is available.

RESUME WRITING TIPS


Keep It Short

Your resume should typically be no longer then two pages. Include a separate third page for reference.


Proofread! Proofread! Proofread! Proofread!

Your resume is an employer's first impression of you. Avoid giving a bad impression by neglecting to proofread your resume.

Carefully proofread it to ensure that there are no spelling or grammatical errors. It is also helpful to ask a friend to proofread

your resume. They may be able to find mistakes that you may have missed.


Research Organization

Take the time to research the organization. Learn about the culture of the organization, their mission statement, and available 

job opportunities. Understanding the organization allows you to target your skills and qualifications to the specific organization 

and position that you are applying for.


Have a Plain Text Resume Available

Many employers are now requesting that resumes be submitted electronically through email. A plain text resume should have

no formatting, including:

* no italics, bold, or underline

* no bullets(dashes or asterisks can be used instead)

* no columns 

* use a standard font that most computers will have. Including ; Arial, Tahoma, and Verdana*
